Jammed Disposal

Hex-key clear from underneath, recover the obstruction, test on multiple cycles before leaving.

Leak Repair

Top (sink flange), side (dishwasher inlet, drain elbow), or bottom (housing crack). Top + side repair; bottom = replace.

No Power / Hum

Reset switch first, then capacitor, then motor. Diagnose live and quote repair vs replacement before any work.

Full Replacement

Old unit out, new one in, hauled away. Most major brands (major brands) stocked in the truck.

Why Disposal Calls Don’t Have to Be Annoying

Four habits that separate a careful disposal repair from a "buy a new one" upsell.

Repair First When It Makes Sense

A jammed or no-power disposal is often a 15-minute fix. We try the cheap things first (reset, hex-key clear, switch test) before quoting a $300+ replacement.

  • Reset, clear, switch test first
  • Replace only when truly justified
  • Honest repair-vs-replace quote
Diagnostic before quoting any replacement.

Right-Size the Replacement

A 1/3 HP disposal frustrates an active kitchen. A 1 HP overkill ages out the same way. We talk household size, sink usage, and budget before recommending HP.

  • Match HP to actual kitchen use
  • Stainless grind chamber for longevity
  • Brand options shown side-by-side
HP and brand options reviewed at the sink.

Dishwasher Tie-In Done Right

Most local code requires either a high loop or an air gap on the dishwasher drain into the disposal. We install per code so you don’t fail a future inspection (or get backflow into the dishwasher).

  • High loop or air gap per local code
  • Dishwasher drain properly secured
  • Inspection-ready

Old Unit Goes With Us

Disposals weigh ~15 lbs and don’t go in the regular trash. Replacement comes with disposal of the old unit at no obligation; you don’t deal with it.

  • Old unit hauled away at no extra
  • Workspace cleaned
  • Test cycle before leaving
Disposal swap from arrival to haul-away.

Garbage Disposal FAQ

How disposals fail, what gets repaired vs replaced, and what to expect on a service call.

My disposal hums but doesn’t spin. What’s wrong?
Almost always a jam. Power off at the breaker, look down the throat with a flashlight, and use a 1/4" hex key in the bottom-center socket of the disposal to free the rotor. Recover any obstruction, then hit the red reset button on the bottom and test. If it still hums after that, capacitor or motor; call dispatch.
There’s a puddle under the disposal. Repair or replace?
Depends on where it’s leaking from. Top (sink flange) or side (dishwasher inlet, discharge elbow): repairable, usually a gasket or hose. Bottom (housing crack): replace; the housing is cast and not repairable.
How long do disposals last?
8–12 years for a basic 1/3 HP unit; 12–15+ years for a 3/4 HP or 1 HP unit with stainless internals. Heavy daily use shortens that; light use extends it. Mineral hardness in the water also matters.
What size disposal do I need?
1/3 HP: light use, single occupant, mostly soft food. 1/2 HP: standard family. 3/4 HP: active kitchen, harder waste (citrus rinds, small bones). 1 HP: heavy use or you want it dead-quiet. We size at the sink based on how the kitchen actually gets used.
What can’t go in a disposal?
Coffee grounds (compact in the trap), eggshells (membrane wraps the impellers), pasta and rice (swell in the trap), grease (coats the line and clogs downstream), and obviously anything fibrous (celery, corn husks, onion skins). When in doubt, trash it.
