Hose Bib Repair

Drip from the spout, leak around the handle, weeping from the bonnet. Rebuild kit fixes most.

Frost-Proof Replacement

Standard hose bibs freeze; frost-proof spigots have the shutoff inside the warm wall. Standard winter upgrade.

New Spigot Install

Adding a hose bib where there isn’t one. Run the supply, install through-wall, add interior shutoff.

Interior Shutoff Add

No interior shutoff for the hose bib? Add one inside the basement or crawlspace so the line can be drained for winter.

Burst-After-Freeze Repair

Frozen hose bib that finally split. Cut out the failed run, install frost-proof, add interior shutoff.

Vacuum Breaker Install

Code-required backflow prevention on outdoor spigots; protects drinking water from contamination.

Why Outdoor Faucets Fail and How to Stop It

Four small upgrades that prevent the big winter problems.

Frost-Proof Is Worth It

Standard hose bibs freeze every cold winter, eventually splitting the pipe inside the wall. Frost-proof spigots have the shutoff valve set 8–14 inches inside the wall; water never sits in the cold zone.

  • No more sleeve-and-cover dance
  • Water shut off inside the warm wall
  • Common winter upgrade; pays back fast

Add the Interior Shutoff

Even with a frost-proof, an interior shutoff lets you isolate the line entirely for winter (recommended in deep-freeze regions) or for repair without shutting off the whole house.

  • Drain the line for hard freezes
  • Isolate without shutting off main
  • Easier next-time repair
Adding an interior shutoff with the spigot replacement.

Vacuum Breaker = Code Compliance

Most jurisdictions require a vacuum breaker on every outdoor spigot; it stops contaminated yard water from being siphoned back into the drinking-water supply. We install per code on every job.

  • Code-required backflow protection
  • Stops contamination siphoning
  • Inspection-ready

Repair the Wall Penetration Right

A spigot replacement is mostly indoor work; we cut the supply line in the basement or crawl space, run the new line, and seal the wall penetration so it doesn’t become a moisture or pest entry.

  • Penetration sealed inside and out
  • No drafty hole left behind
  • Workspace cleaned

Outdoor Faucet FAQ

How outdoor spigots fail, when to upgrade to frost-proof, and how to prepare for winter.

My outdoor faucet drips when the hose is off. Repair or replace?
Usually repairable with a rebuild kit (washer, packing nut, sometimes a new bonnet). If the spigot is more than 15 years old or it’s a non-frost-proof in a freeze region, it’s a good time to upgrade to frost-proof.
What is a "frost-proof" spigot?
A spigot where the shutoff valve is positioned 8–14 inches inside the wall, in the heated space. When you turn the handle off, no water remains in the freeze zone; so it can’t freeze and split.
Why does my outdoor faucet leak only when I turn the hose on?
Usually the vacuum breaker (anti-siphon device on top of the spigot) has failed. Replacement is a 5-minute job and inexpensive. We do it on the same visit.
How do I winterize a non-frost-proof spigot?
Three steps: (1) shut off the interior valve that feeds the spigot, (2) open the spigot fully and let it drain, (3) leave the spigot open through winter. If you don’t have an interior shutoff, that’s the upgrade we’d recommend before the next freeze.
Can I install an outdoor faucet myself?
Possible if you have access to the supply line and basic plumbing skill. The risks: a poorly-sealed wall penetration becomes a moisture / pest issue, no vacuum breaker is a code violation, and a leak in the wall cavity isn’t obvious until damage is done. Worth pricing the install.
