Why a "Quick Toilet Install" Goes Wrong

Four steps a careful install never skips.

Inspect the Flange First

The flange is the metal/plastic ring under the toilet that bolts it to the floor. Most leak-at-base callbacks come from a flange that should have been repaired during the install. We check it on every job.

  • Flange integrity verified
  • Corroded flanges repaired
  • Closet bolts replaced fresh
Inspecting the flange before the new wax ring goes on.

Set It Level (Or It Wobbles, Then Leaks)

A toilet that wobbles breaks the wax-ring seal over time. We shim correctly, level the bowl, and bed the wax ring properly so the seal lasts the life of the toilet.

  • Level on both axes
  • Shimmed correctly (not just one side)
  • Wax ring bedded with full compression
Leveling the toilet before final tightening.

Address the Subfloor If Needed

If we pull the old toilet and find rotted subfloor, we tell you before installing the new one. A new toilet on rotten wood = same problem in a year. Subfloor repair quoted on the spot.

  • Subfloor inspected after old toilet pull
  • Rot patched if found
  • Quoted before any further install
Subfloor patch under a fresh install.

Test, Then Walk Through

Before we leave: full flush test, base perimeter checked dry, supply line valve verified secure, and a walk-through with you so you know what you’re looking at if anything seems off later.

  • Multi-cycle flush test
  • Dry-base verification at the perimeter
  • Walk-through and Q&A before we leave
Final test cycle before walkthrough.

Toilet Install FAQ

Common questions about choosing a toilet, what’s included, and what to do with the old one.

Can you install a toilet I bought online?
Yes. Customer-supplied toilets get installed at the same labor rate as our stocked units. Have it on site when we arrive. We supply the wax ring, fresh closet bolts, and supply-line connector.
How do I choose a toilet; comfort-height vs standard?
Comfort-height (17") sits about 2" taller than standard (15"). Easier on knees and tall users; sometimes awkward for small kids. Elongated bowls are more comfortable; round bowls fit smaller bathrooms. Powerful-flush models help when older drain lines are slow.
How long does an installation take?
Standard replacement: 60–90 minutes. Add 30 minutes if the flange needs repair. Add 1–2 hours if the subfloor needs patching. We quote total time before starting.
Will my new toilet save water?
Yes. New toilets are 1.28 GPF (gallons per flush) by code; older units are often 3.5–5 GPF. A typical replacement saves 10,000+ gallons per year for a household of four.
What if the new toilet doesn’t fit my space?
We measure the rough-in (distance from wall to toilet bolts; usually 12") and bowl footprint before installing. If the unit doesn’t fit, we don’t install it. Bring exchanges back to your retailer.
